Moments Like These

Moments.

As I read the word, my head is filled with infinite snapshots. My mind is flooded with vivid images and sweet memories. As you can probably imagine, at this time of my life, what I think of most is everything I’ve done in the past year that has been for the last time… My last first day of high school, my last football game, my last homecoming, my last prom. Each of these moments fill me with such joy and such longing at the same time. Do I long to be in high school forever? No, absolutely not. But have I had some of the best days, nights, weekends, and summers in the past four years? Absolutely.

Last night was my senior prom. SENIOR PROM, y’all. It was a day I felt would never arrive, but here we are and it’s already in the past. I couldn’t have asked for a better night! As the evening flew by, we took countless pictures, laughed our way through dinner, and awkwardly pretended we knew how to dance. In the midst of all the laughter, candid pictures, and out of date pop songs, I couldn’t help but remind myself that this was a moment I would remember forever. This was a big one. It was the last time all of my friends and I would get really dressed up together. It was the last time we could justify going bowling in formal gowns and then staying up until 4 in the morning. It was the last time my mom would make us breakfast as we sleepily made our way downstairs in a post-prom haze. It was the last time, and I did everything I could to savor every minute of it.

What not only last night, but this entire past year has forced me to realize is the incredible importance of really taking in all of your moments. Memorize the way that song makes you feel your happiest, and never forget the way it feels to be looked at so sweetly by that person. Always remember how it feels to laugh until your abs ache and tears stream down your cheeks. Hold on to the moments when you’re thinking “there is no way that anything could be better than this.”

Also realize that it’s okay to move on and let moments become memories. Know that as good as the things you’ve done have been, what is ahead is probably even greater. Remind yourself to be okay when moments pass because life is meant to be remembered not relived.

Things change, and that’s life but that doesn’t mean that anything has to be forgotten. So don’t forget to take pictures, remember to write things down and fully engage in every moment because before you know it, life will be changing – ready or not.

{and always be ready to remind yourself that…}

This is a moment you will remember forever. This is a big one.”
