UF Day 1

WHEW. Thankful to say Day 1 of college classes has come and gone and I’m still hanging in there all in one piece!

After breakfast and a final goodbye with my family this morning, I boarded the (correct) bus and headed to my very first class at the University of Florida. Although I’ve been before for football games and such, it was so strange walking around campus this morning knowing that I was headed to MY first class. As an actual STUDENT.

I couldn’t help but feel slightly out of place on my trek to class. I did my best to be inconspicuous as I checked the map on my phone to be sure I was headed in the right direction, and I made sure that nothing on my person displayed UF19 ( I mean, no freshman wants people to be able to tell that they’re a freshman…) Despite my efforts to blend in with the world around me, I really felt more transparent than ever before. I was convinced that everyone could tell I have no idea what I’m doing (but I mean, really, who does?)

Thankfully, once I was in class (which happened to be French 1) everything began to feel right at home. Despite never having sat in that room before, things just finally felt normal. I mean, a classroom is a classroom, teachers are teachers, textbooks are textbooks… there can only be so much variation.

After French, I confidently headed towards my second and final class of the day: Calculus 2… and even though I’ve already endured a year of AP Calc BC, this class will probably be my worst nightmare. After being warned that 26% of students drop Calc 2 by the end of the semester (!!!), I ate lunch with one of my new classmates and realized that I have such a new appreciation for friendly people.

Heading back to my dorm I managed to get on the wrong bus and enjoyed a nice tour of off-campus Gainesville (so unintentional… but I survived so yay!) Then, in an attempt to get of the bus I couldn’t pull the stop-cord-thing hard enough, so I missed not one, but two stops I wanted to get off at… and once I finally got off that dang bus, I began my longer-than-it-should’ve-been walk back to my dorm and was finally able to realize that even with a few little bumps in the road, I guess college seems pretty doable.

So here’s to hoping it stays that way!… stay tuned!
