Good Friday. As soon as the clock strikes midnight, Facebook and Twitter are filled with sentiments reminding ourselves of a very dark day. Tetelestai, they say. It is finished.
But what does that mean? What is finished? The prophecy of Jesus’s death on the cross? The Romans’ plan to execute Jesus?
Yeah, those are finished.
But more importantly, the darkness that ruled this world is finished. The darkness that ruled your life is finished. The chains of sin are broken, the battle is won, the war is over.
It is finished.
The idea that you need to earn favor with God is finished. The fear of not doing enough or not being enough is finished. Today, 2000 years ago, your sin was taken on the shoulders of an innocent man and it is no more.
There is a sadness that comes with the darkness of knowing that Christ hung on a tree. Knowing that a crown of thorns dug into the flesh of the living God. Knowing that for MY shortcomings and sinful nature, the Son of God took on the pains of the world so that I could bask in grace & finality.
There is a sadness, but there is so much more joy. To know that in just 3 days the tomb would be empty. That He would rise again. That death could not hold him & sin could not beat him.
So much freedom in that truth. Live in it. Rest in it. In knowing that your sins have been paid for by the One who gave you life, and as we reflect on an event that was nothing short of tragic for Christ followers on that dark day, just know that the light is coming. Love as deep and as wide as you can imagine, it has covered you. Your fight has been fought.
Tetelestai. It is finished.
