Sometimes life gets me super down. Sometimes the things I want and expect to happen don’t ever happen at all. Sometimes other people let me down, and sometimes I let myself down. Luckily for us, in these times of trouble, pain, or just flat out discouragement, we have words of comfort that come directly from the mouth of God.

So, on this gloomy Wednesday afternoon, here are five of my favorite verses for when life hits me just a little too hard:
1. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10
God has a PLAN for you. He made you a NEW CREATION so that you could carry out that plan – he wants you to be the best you that you can be so that you can be the best for Him. How can you be sad when the CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE paid the ultimate price so that you could do the good things he planned for you??
2. “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand I will not be shaken” Psalm 16:8
What more encouragement could you need than knowing that the Lord – the one who gave life its name – is on your side? Not only is he on your side, but he is at your right hand ready to step in whenever you need him. (which is always, but still.)
3. “Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
Christ’s power works through weakness. THROUGH WEAKNESS. Is there anything more reassuring than knowing that it is so totally okay that you are weak because that weakness is what allows Christ to work through you??
When you are weak, He is strong! Always!!
4. “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again – my Savior and my God!” Psalm 42:11
In all things, in all sadness and in all pain, put all of your hope in the Lord. Praising God when you feel down can honestly lift your spirits so much. Putting your hope in things of the world will always be temporary – so be encouraged by the immensity of the Father. He and his love are everlasting.
5. “The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. He grants the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them.” Psalm 145: 18-19
Call to the Lord when you need him. He will hear you and he will always rescue you from whatever trials you’re facing. Maybe it won’t be in the way you think – he’s not going to guarantee you everything you want – but however he works in your life, it will undoubtedly be with your best interest in mind.
